She gave me photos of her ceramics,
with the fairy-tale characters of the Sardinian-Vietri period,
to make me reproduce them
with my new decorative technique:
the Cloisonné.
Luciano Sr.
The series takes its name from the ceramist Irene Kowaliska, considered among the greatest exponents of the “German period” of Vietri ceramics, that moment, between the two wars, in which numerous foreign artists, driven by the enchanting beauty of the places, settled in the area and gave new impetus to the ceramic production of Vietri, making it famous in the world.
“Irene” began from the meeting between Irene Kowaliska and Luciano Sr., who reinterprets some of the potter’s designs with his new technique, ceramic cloisonné. The series consists of 10×10 cm tiles and a selection of six drawings, scenes that reproduce figures of fishermen, mothers with children, shepherds and mermaids, directly inspired by the tradition and everyday life of Southern Italy. The skits, glossy on a matt white background, alternating with matt white tiles, appear as if suspended, temporally abstract.
